The Finger Lakes Region of New York

There are eleven Finger Lakes in NY State.

They began as North running rivers that were overrun by Southward moving glaciers going back as far as 2 million years ago. It is believed that the two most recent glacial events contributed greatly to the beauty of the Finger Lakes. These events date back to 11,000 to 21,000 years ago when New York was covered by glaciers more than 2 miles thick. The weight and scouring action of such large sheets of ice moving over the river valleys, carved out the Finger Lakes. (glacial details)

Since then, the Finger Lakes have been the cradle for many important developments in the history of mankind. Today, they are a great place to vacation. Whether you are looking for wine and romance, or fun for the whole family, there is something for everyone here in the heart of New York State.

Each Finger Lake is its own unique treasure, start exploring them here as you plan your next visit.
